Autism assessment in Perth

Seeking autism assessment from Perth, Perthshire, or Kinross means dealing with a health board that holds no local waiting figures. This guide explains the routes that do exist.

The NHS route for autistic adults in Perth and Kinross

If you live in Perth, Perthshire, or Kinross and think you may be autistic, the NHS route runs through NHS Tayside, the board covering Perth and Kinross alongside Dundee City and Angus. There is no Perth-specific autism service: your GP refers you to the board's adult mental health services, so the first step is a GP appointment.

For children and young people, referrals normally go through CAMHS. Since March 2025, however, NHS Tayside CAMHS has accepted new autism (and ADHD) referrals only for children who also have a co-existing mental health condition, a restriction introduced because of capacity pressures. If your child needs an assessment, confirm the current status of CAMHS referrals with your GP before being referred, as the position may change.

What NHS Tayside told us it does not know

NHS Tayside responded to a Freedom of Information request submitted by ADHD Scot on 24 June 2026, after the statutory deadline and formal escalation. The response revealed how little the board can say about waits for people in this area:

  • It holds no separate autism (or ADHD) waiting figures for Perth and Kinross. Only the Dundee area could be given a waiting-list count; Perth and Kinross and Angus hold no separate figures (Section 17 of FOISA)
  • It could give no median waiting times at all. For autism, its Trakcare referral system does not record the clinical reason for a referral, so autism assessments cannot be separated from referrals of all kinds
  • Because the data is not held in reportable form, people in Perth and Kinross cannot currently be told their position on the waiting list or how long they are likely to wait

Making the GP conversation count

A well-prepared GP appointment gives your referral the best start. It helps to:

  • Give examples of your traits from everyday life rather than general descriptions
  • Mention that traits have been present since childhood, even if they were not recognised at the time
  • Complete a validated screener beforehand. Our autism screener gives you something concrete to bring along
  • Ask specifically for a referral for a neurodevelopmental assessment

If your GP is reluctant, you are entitled to ask why and to seek a second opinion from another GP within the same practice.

Choosing a private autism assessment

Private autism assessments are available to people in Perth through providers in the area and a wider range of online providers who serve the whole of Scotland, which can matter if travelling to appointments is not straightforward from your part of Perthshire. According to our private autism assessment guide, expect to pay from around £800 upwards for a single-clinician adult assessment, and considerably more for multi-disciplinary assessments or combined ADHD and autism assessments. The regulation picture for autism assessment differs from ADHD assessment and is worth understanding before you book.

HIS registration: Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) is Scotland's regulator for private healthcare in Scotland. An HIS-registered provider has been inspected and meets required standards. However, a large proportion of private autism assessments are led by clinical psychologists. HIS has confirmed that where a service does not employ, engage, or grant practising privileges to a medical doctor, registered nurse, or other specified professional, it is not legally required to register with HIS. The absence of HIS registration is therefore common for autism services and is not automatically a red flag, provided no doctor or nurse is involved. Any service that does involve a doctor or nurse should be registered.

Checking individual clinicians: Because psychology-led services are exempt from HIS registration, checking the individual clinician's professional registration is particularly important. Clinical psychologists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can verify any clinician on the HCPC register. Assessment method: A thorough autism assessment uses validated diagnostic instruments such as the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) alongside a structured developmental interview and collateral history.
